The Commonwealth Respite & Carelink Centre is funded by the Department of Social Services (DSS) to provide short-term, planned or emergency respite for carers in the Far North Coast Region. Carers and care recipients can be of any age, Cultural and Linguistically Diverse Background or Indigenous.

We have a number of different programs that provide this support to specific carer target groups.

National Respite for Carers Program

Carers of people who are frail aged, have a disability, dementia, chronic, terminal or mental illness.

Mental Health Respite Program

Carers of a person who has a mental illness and/or psychiatric disability,

Carers of people with Autism or Intellectual disability that have complex care needs.

Young Carers At Risk Program

Carers who are under 25 years of age and are at risk of leaving school or vocational studies due to their caring role. Under this program we can assist young people who provide a significant level of support even if they are not in a primary caring role. We can assist with school work through tutoring services, access to recreational activities as well as short-term planned or emergency respite.

Young With Severe to Profound Disability Program

Carers of a person with a severe disability who are under 30 years of age.

Consumer Directed Respite Care Program

Carers of a person who is frail aged or has dementia. The care recipient is over the age of 65 years or 50 years if Indigenous. Under this program eligible carers are provided with a $4,200 package for a period of a year. The carer chooses what supports they need to assist them in their caring role.

Residential Respite booking Service

Carers and/or eligible care recipients who wish to book a period of respite in an aged care facility. Our Centre manages a booking service for a number of aged care facilities in the region. We can also provide information on other facilities that have respite beds, which are not managed by the Centre. The person going into a facility for respite is required to have an assessment conducted by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).
